united against food waste
Friday the 4th of October United Against Food Waste took place at the town hall square in Copenhagen. The largest event on food waste in Denmark. A great idea from the always enthusiastic founder of Stop Wasting Food, Selina Juul. The event was addressed to the Danish consumers and the retail sector, with the united aim of reducing the huge amount of good, edible food that is thrown out every day for several reasons.
The event was inspired by the global “Feeding the 5000-event” which have taken place in other European capitals. Obviously, the idea of this event was also to cook for the visitors and let them taste that the food characterized as waste is neither musty or damp, but in fact perfectly suitable for making soups, cakes or juices.
I am doubtful whether an event like this will lead to a changed behavior among the consumers. It seemed like the passing people found it hard to tell that the event was actually about food waste and surplus food, and not only the opportunity to get a free meal. It seemed like the dialog was missing, and the visual expression of the food was either green bananas or shiny fresh vegetable that where displayed with sale in mind.
But the event results in press coverage and political discussions, and I believe that is the way to go if we want to see a noticeable reduction of food waste in the future.
